We're all going to die one day, much like these two merging galaxies

Everything in the universe comes with an expiration date.  Our planet, for example, will likely be swallowed by the sun in 7 or 8 billion years, when it begins to run out of fuel, heading toward its own death. Milk, on the other hand, spoils after a couple of weeks. And of course, even some of the largest structures in our universe, galaxies, will also die ... some in a far more dramatic fashion than others.  SEE ALSO: 2 galaxies merge as 1 in remarkable Hubble Telescope photo Two galactic drama queens located about 350 million light-years away have just started to merge into one, effectively ending their lengthy, cosmic loneliness.  The galaxies, called Arp 256, were spotted in the process of merging by the Hubble Space Telescope, our esteemed eye in the sky since 1990.  "This image suspends them in a single moment, freezing the chaotic spray of gas, dust, and stars kicked up by the gravitational forces pulling the two galaxies together," the European Space Agency (ESA) said in a statement. "Though their nuclei are still separated by a large distance, the shapes of the galaxies in Arp 256 are impressively distorted. The galaxy in the upper part of the image contains very pronounced tidal tails — long, extended ribbons of gas, dust, and stars." One day, our Milky Way galaxy will also merge with the Andromeda galaxy. That galactic crash is expected to happen in about 4 billion years. But even in galactic death, there is new life. Gravitational forces have produced new hotbeds of star formation within the galaxies. "The galaxies are ablaze with dazzling regions of star formation: The bright blue fireworks are stellar nurseries, churning out hot infant stars," ESA said.  "These vigorous bursts of new life are triggered by the massive gravitational interactions, which stir up interstellar gas and dust out of which stars are born." WATCH: The most massive black holes on record were just discovered 3.5 billion light-years away......

Trump says 'not much political support' on raising age to buy guns, as White House backpedals on proposal

Donald Trump has said there is "not much political support" for raising the minimum age to purchase certain guns, as the White House backpedalled on imposing a gun control measure that the President publicly backed. The NRA, wich spent more than $11m (£7.91m) supporting Mr Trump during the 2016 election, sued the state of Florida last week over a new gun law signed by Republican Governor Rick Scott, banning the purchase of firearms by anyone under the age of 21, claiming it was unconstitutional.......

Russia leaps ahead of rivals to showcase 'hypersonic' Kinzhal missile

Russia has published a video showing the launch of a new missile in its latest move in a high-tech arms race to develop and field guided weapons capable of hypersonic speeds. In a follow-up to President Vladimir Putin's unveiling of several new nuclear super weapons last week, he Russian Defense Ministry unveiled a video clip showing a jet launching the "Kinzhal". Russia is racing against China and the United States to develop hypersonic - highly supersonic - missiles. The majority of these efforts focus on a technique known as boost-glide weapons that use intercontinental ballistic missiles to propel gliders to hypersonic speeds. China and the United States were previously thought to lead Russia in this area. But Kinzhal, or Dagger, appears to skip the line and claim early leadership in the hypersonic race. The missile appears to be a heavily modified version of Russia's Iskander short-range ballistic missiles, which are nuclear-capable. It is launched from the air by a MiG-31 fighter jet. In this photo made from the footage taken from Russian Defense Ministry official web site on Sunday, March 11, 2018, a MiG-31 fighter jet of the Russian air force launches the new Kinzhal hypersonic missile during a test in southern Russia  Credit: AP Photo/ Russian Defense Ministry Press Service Designed by the Soviets to intercept American bombers, the MiG-31 is both extremely fast and high-flying — making it an ideal launcher for Kinzhal. When the weapon is dropped from the plane, it is already in thin air and traveling at high speeds. After separating from the plane, Kinzha's engine ignites to propel it to 10 times the speed of sound. The video shows one of the missiles mounted below an MiG-31 as it takes flight. Close shots of the missile's engines were blurred out. The final seconds of the video show the large missile dropped from below the plane. After falling for several seconds, the engine erupts and the weapon arcs away. Russia claims the weapon is already operational, unlike some of the other, more fantastical, weapons announced by Putin last week — such as a nuclear-powered cruise missile. In this photo made from the footage taken from Russian Defense Ministry official web site on Sunday, March 11, 2018, a Russia's Kinzhal hypersonic missile flies during a test in southern Russia Credit: AP Photo/ Russian Defense Ministry Press Service The video appears to back up those claims, or at least suggests the weapon is significantly far along in its development. Russia claims the missile's warhead is capable of maneuvering at extreme speeds to confuse enemy missile defenses. Though Russia's current weapons have the ability to best missile defenses, the issue is being used to justify new defense spending. Kinzhal gives Russia early hypersonic strike abilities while it pursues boost-glide weapons to match those under development in China and the United States. Putin announced the development of such a system, known as Avangard, in his speech last week. Other weapons included massive nuclear torpedoes and underwater drone submarines. ......

Austin package explosions: Third bomb hits city hosting South by Southwest as officials warn residents to be wary of unexpected packages

A third explosion has been linked to two other deadly attacks at homes in Texas this month, where police are warning residents not to touch any unexpected boxes that end up on their door steps. Austin Police Chief Brian Manley confirmed to reporters that the third blast — which followed just hours after an earlier deadly explosion Monday — is suspected of being connected to the recent explosions. "This, again, is the third in what we believe to be related incidents that have occurred in the past 10 days," Mr Manley said.......

Convicted 'Bookkeeper of Auschwitz' dies aged 96, German media reports

A former Nazi SS guard dubbed the "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" has died aged 96 nearly three years after his conviction for being an accessory to murder, German media said Monday. A spokesman of the prosecutor's office in the northern city of Hanover told AFP that Oskar Groening's lawyer had informed him of his death but he was unable to confirm it officially. Groening worked as an accountant at Auschwitz, sorting and counting the money taken from those killed or used as slave labour, and shipping it back to his Nazi superiors in Berlin. He was found guilty in July 2015 of being an accessory to the murders of 300,000 people at the camp and sentenced to four years in prison. A court doctor determined last year that he was able to serve his sentence, on condition he was given appropriate nursing and medical care, but he was never jailed. More to follow... ......

Donald Trump backs off raising minimum age for buying semi-automatic rifles amid NRA opposition

Donald Trump has blamed a lack of "political support" after he backed off raising the minimum age for buying a rifle amid opposition from the National Rifle Association. The US president initially called for the minimum age to be increased from 18 to 21 in the wake of the Florida school shooting, saying he was willing to defy the gun lobby over the issue.  However the idea was left off a list of policy proposals announced by White House officials, with the change instead to be debated by a new federal commission on gun safety.  The White House will also assist states in training teachers to use guns, support better background checks and ban "bump stock" devices that turn firearms into machine guns.  Mr Trump tweeted on Monday: "On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting. States are making this decision. Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly)." New gun controls have been fiercely debated in Washington after 17 people were killed in a high school shooting in Parkland, Florida, last month.  Much of the focus has been on why the age limit for buying the gun used in the attack, an AR-15 rifle, is 18 but the limit for a handgun is 21. Nikolas Cruz, the suspected shooter, is 19.  Mr Trump initially supported the move, chastising members of congress for not backing the policy during a round-table meeting with figures from both parties in the White House.  Very strong improvement and strengthening of background checks will be fully backed by White House. Legislation moving forward. Bump Stocks will soon be out. Highly trained expert teachers will be allowed to conceal carry, subject to State Law. Armed guards OK, deterrent!.......— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 12, 2018 "Some of you are petrified of the NRA. You can't be petrified. They have great power over you people...they have less power over me," Mr Trump said.  The meeting, which was captured by television cameras, saw the president express interest in a number of gun control measures which stunned Republicans.  ....On 18 to 21 Age Limits, watching court cases and rulings before acting. States are making this decision. Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly).— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 12, 2018 Days later Mr Trump had a closed-door meeting with the NRA, which opposes raising the minimum age for buying a semi-automatic rifle.  Chris Cox, chief lobbyist for the Institute for Legislative Action, the NRA's lobbying arm, said after the meeting that Mr Trump and Mike Pence, the vice president, "don't want gun control".   Mr Trump said the meeting had been "great". ......
